The only times that Kougaiji ever sang was when Lirin wanted him to sing a lullaby for her. The last time that happened, Lirin was around four years old. Needless to say, Kougaiji was out of practice. After all, one didn't have many opportunities to vocalize when one was in the relentless pursuit of the five founding sutras of Heaven and Earth.
After the entire fight with Gyumao—in which the Kougaiji-tachi joined forces with the Sanzo-ikkou to kill the demon emperor—and Kougaiji was the new leader of all demon, Dokugakuji and a group of soldiers that had joined Kougaiji's side decided that it was only appropriate that they throw a big party. Complete with alcohol, a karaoke contest, and demons from the nearest villages. Goku and Lirin weren't allowed to touch the alcohol.
Quite suddenly, a microphone was being thrust into Kougaiji's hand and before he could protest, he had been hoisted on top of the stage and the opening strains of the song were filling the night air. It took the redhead a moment before he awkwardly began to sing. He was pleasantly surprised when people began to cheer before he became more confident and finished the song with a bow to the audience.
The party was going strong and Kougaiji was getting some more food from the buffet table when a cheer rose up from the audience indicating yet another victim who had been forced to sing the next song. The newly-appointed demon emperor nearly choked when he saw that it was a very drunk Sanzo standing on the stage.
Fully expecting the monk to unleash his sutra on the demon commoners for forcing him to sing, Kougaiji pushed his way to the front of the crowd to pull the blond down before he could hurt his people. He wasn't expecting Sanzo to burst into song the moment the music played. For a drunkard, he was singing pretty well.
The moment the song was done, Sanzo dropped the mike and promptly fell off the stage, completely drunk. Kougaiji caught him and blinked for a few times before he enlisted Dokugakuji's help in bringing the monk into the castle to put him inside one of the spare bedrooms. Hakkai followed to check on the monk.
After putting the monk to bed, the three of them left the bedroom, turning off the lights, and returning to the party. When the festivities finally wound down, Kougaiji convinced the rest of the ikkou to stay the night in the castle before going back home. Seeing as their fearless leader was sleeping in one of the rooms of said castle, they didn't see any reason to refuse.
On the way to his bedroom, Kougaiji paused outside Sanzo's door. On a whim, he entered the room only to find the monk lying in bed, eyes open and staring at the ceiling.
"I can't sleep."
Kougaiji doesn't know why he did it, but he opened his mouth and began to sing a lullaby. In a few minutes, Sanzo's fast asleep. The monk might not be Lirin, but Kougaiji kisses him on the forehead anyway before leaving the room.
