"A turtleneck sweater?" Kougaiji blinked and looked up at Sanzo.
"You do know that we live in a tropical country, right? The only
place I would be able to wear this without sweating like a pig would be a mall.
A really cold mall. Or early morning during the rainy season."
Sanzo took a drag from his cigarette and ignored the muted music that drifted
into the room from the dance floor outside. "When's your birthday? I
forgot."
"January nine," the redhead answered, not seeing the connection. His
lilac eyes drifted to the black turtleneck lying inside the open box on his
lap. It was soft. Really soft. Kougaiji traced his fingers along the
wide red zigzag along the hem of the sweater.
"China's still cold in January. I think there's still snow in some parts
during that time."
Okay…was Sanzo saying that he was going to bring Kougaiji to China for his
birthday? They'd been seeing each other for a while now and the blond was at
the bar every night he was free but…going overseas? A simple dinner and movie
was enough.
Instead of voicing the thoughts that were running around his head Kougaiji
asked, "Why China?"
Sanzo avoided looking into his eyes when he answered. That was strange in
itself since the blond usually had nothing to hide. "My dad lives in
China."
Silence reigned in the small room. Kougaiji was in his 'work clothes' since Sanzo
was ostensibly there for a show. The redhead shifted a bit on the couch and the
blond moved a few inches closer.
Sanzo suddenly spoke up, reaching for the Christmas gift. "Look. If you
don't like the damn thing, just give it back and—"
Kougaiji tightened his hold on the turtleneck sweater. "I like it, Sanzo.
I really do. It's just…" He twisted the black-and-red garment in his
hands. "China? To meet your dad?"
Will he approve of me?
Unspoken words. But they were there.
"Dad's alright. He won't care what you do for a living." The blond
put out his cigarette on the ashtray on the table.
"If you're sure…"
"I'm sure."
"…Sanzo?"
"Hm?" Sanzo took a break from staring a hole into the opposite wall,
his purple eyes meeting Kougaiji's lilac ones.
"Merry Christmas."
"You too." The blond smiled—sure, it was a small smile, but it was
still a smile—and the redhead smiled back.
